BEFORE...
AFTER!
First Floor
The backlit, intricately patterned entranceway (formerly the front door of a check-cashing store) appears to be composed of one material, but architect Bill Peterson actually used two: pierced porcelain enamel for the first seven and a half feet, and ultralight brownstone for the rest.
Second Floor
The building’s earlier owners stuccoed over the original brownstone blocks and boarded up windows for security. Now the brownstone façade can be raised like a garage door to reveal the modern living room inside.
The garage-door-like façade has sensors on the sides and bottom—it will stop moving if it encounters an obstacle. It’s activated by keying a control panel hidden in the closet. To go from opened to closed, or vice versa, takes only a few minutes.
The dining area at the back of the ground floor can also switch from indoor to outdoor spaces on command.
